THE MEAT TRUST.
VIEWS OF SOUNDS FARMERS
UNION
At a.recent meeting of the executive of the Sounds Farmers' Union a letter was received from the provincial secretary forwarding two resolutions regarding the Meat Trust problem, and also a copy of the lesolutions adopted by the .Dominion Conference. The branch confirmed the conference lesolutioris, and the two remits from the executive were fully debated, but were not acted upon, and the following motion, moved by the chairman, seconded by Mr Wilson, was considered more satisfactory : —
"In view of the fact that most of the labor unrest in the world is due to the increased cost of living, brought about, not by legitimate, producers, but by the operations of the trusts and middlemen out to exploit both the producer and the consumer, this branch of the Farmers.' Union is of opinion that the Imperial Government should bo uigod to maintain the Goods Controller's drastic regulations now being ] brought into force to restrict j profiteering by middlemen and trusts, j not only for the duration of tho war, but when peace conditions again prevail. Also that the High Commissioner in London .should keep tho Imperial Government and the British consumer, through the press, duly advised from time to time of the ! wholesale prices at which Now Zealand produce is placed on the market and that some method be adopted of indelibly branding New Zealand j moat to prevent its being sold as the j pioductions of other countries. Also j that the New Zealand Government I should be urged to adopt all possible ! measures after the war for adver- \ tising the products of this Dominion. \ and if necessary establishing retail ; shops in Britain, so that the' British ■ consumer may ho brought into more > direct touch with tho producer in. { Now Zealand." {
