DEPUTATION TO MINISTERS.
""THE LINE OF SAFETY."
[Press Association.]
WELLINGTON, Sept, 27. The Second Division League interviewed the Right Bon. Mr Massey, Sir Joseph Ward, and Sir James Allen this evening regarding the Pensions Bill and the allowances proposed for the dependants of soldiers. They renewed their reqiiests in accordance with their original proposals, but expressed considerable satisfaction with the concessions given already by the. Bill.
The replies of Ministers were not definite in refusing or assenting to the requests, as the matters were such as must come l>efore Cabinet.
Sir James Allen said that probably the first draft of the Second Division men would not reach Home before August, and he believed that the war might be approaching the end then. He hoped that there would be no necessity to send more than the first class of the Second Division from this country.
Sir Joseph Ward and the Right Hon. Mr Massey both emphasised the necessity of not forcing the Government to go beyond the line of safety, urging that there was a danger of the country 7 being unable to continue bearing its burdens without a- limit. Both agreed that the country could carry the burdens now proposed.
