DROWNING A TURK.
GRIM GALLJPOLI. STRUGGLE
AUCKLAND BOXER'S FEAT
A few weeks ago a description was cabled from Gallipoii of :> struggle which took place. between an Australian soldier and a Turk. It was indicated that they were both big men, and that in some way they cameto grips without weapons, and each sought to overcome the other by sheer strength. They fought and struggled near the edge of a cliff, and finally, locked together, they both fell over the ciiff into the sea. below. The struggle did not cease there, however. The Australian, it was stated, grappled Avith his adversary in tho water, and finally overcame him and drowned him, and then sv.ain a.shore.
The story then seemed to ssierifi.ee truth to pieturesqueness, but it turns out to be substantially true (tele-, graphs the Auckland coi respondent of the Otago Daily Times), except thiat the hero of the affair Mas a iNew Zealander, and not an Australian. An Auckland doctor, writing' from one front, recounts -the incident, and says that the man concerned was Charles ft'woiv, of Auckland, one of New Zealand's -b^st-known footballers and si champion, heavy-weight boxer. Word was received in Auckland reecntly that Savory was struck by a shell when in action at Oallipoli and killed instantly.
