COMBATING AUSTRALIAN TRADE.

WASHINGTON, June 19. Alarmed at the growth of the Australian meat trade the Department of Agriculture has issued an order that every piece of meat imported from Australia must be examined by local inspectors. Heretofore the shipments have been passed on proof being furnished of examination of a few specimens taken at random. The new order means a delay of three days while the examination is proceeding, thus adding considerably to the cost of unloading. The Ventura has arrived at San Francisco with a cargo of 1200 packages of meat.

A MURDER CHARGE,

SYDNEY, June 20. At the trial of Brown for the murder of .Sergeant Hickey on May Ist, the arresting constable gave evidence that after his surrender Brown admitted shooting Hickey. He said that he had to do it in self-defence. Brown, in the course of a statement, declared that in the struggle Hickey grabbed Brown's revolver and fired it. He missed accused, and later,, in trying to prevent Hickey again shooting, the revolver went off and Hickey was shot.

[Sergeant Hickey and a constable went to serve a warrant upon Brown, and1 the shooting took place in Brown's house, when the police officers were effecting the arrest.]}
