A gas explosion occurred' yesterday in a. brick building just about to be occupied at Foxton. Workmen engaged oni the building noticed that the g_as escaped, and a plumber applied a lighted match to a joint. An explosion followed, which shattered tho windows and destroyed a- portion of the ceiling. Nobody was seriously injured. The damage is estimated at £40.—Press Association.

The general manager of the National Bank of New Zealand, Ltd., tsays a Press Association message), has received a cable message from the London Board advising the declaration of a dividend of 6 per cent, for the half-year, and a bonus to shareholders of 1 per cent, on the paid-up capital (£500,000), equalling 13 per cent, in all for the year ended 31st March last. The sum of £20,000 lias been added to the reserve fund, which will then stand at £520,000, £15,000 has been added to the reserve for depreciation of investments, and £36,----750 has been carried forward. The directors have further allocated £15,----000 in reduction of Dank premises account, and £5000 to the officers' pension fund. The annual meeting of tho bank will be held in London on July Ist.
