Few men have had a more chequered and interesting career "than 'Frederick Wilde, who died at Bathurst (N.S.W.) last week, at the age of 83, after baring resided in that district for 62 years. Barn at Brentford, England, Wilde ran away from home and joined the navy, when Ihe was only 12 years of. age. For several years he served under Admiral Charles Napier, and took part in several important engagements during the Crimean War. He wjas also a member of the orew of the flagship whiek conveyed the late Queen Victoria to Ireland and Scotland. Eventually he left the nary on account of the brutal floggings meted ottt to sailors on the least pretext. Deceased used to recall an incident in which a sailor and an officer figured. The officer ordered the sailor to be flogged, and while prepanations were being made to carry out the order, the sailor remarked that he would be the last man the officer would ever* flog, and immediately picked the latter1 up in his arms and jumped1 overboard. The two men were never seen again. That incident, according to Wilde, was to a great extent responsible for the abolition of flogging in the navy. "Sky-leasing," originated in America, has appeared in Australia. It is the leasing of the right to add a storey or two to a standing building. , When a would-be tenant in New York seeks a tenancy in a building already full, he oasts his eye to the roof, and offers to run up an extra storey or two at bis own expense. That is what has happened in Melbourne, and to distinguish it from "ground leasing," the practice has 'been • termed "sky leasing." It is the last word im the expansion of city realty investment.
