LICENSING COMMITTEE.

ANNUAL MEETING

The annual meeting of the Wairau Licensing Committee was held to-day in the Blenheim Courthouse. There were present: Messrs F. 08. Loughnan, S.M., (chairman), J. B. Rayner, G: Maitland, H. Jellyman, W. Clung, and J. McKinley.

APPLICATIONS

Licenses and renewals were granted as follows:—North Bank Accommodation House, Mary J. Green; Wairau Valley Accommodation House, H. B. R-eid; Jordan Falls Accommodation House, W. Chapman; Shaw's Hotel, Renwicktown, Edward Hurcomb; Globe Hotel, Renwicktown, Peter Creedon; Waihopai Accommodation House, John Newman; Okaramio Accommodation House, Joseph Wooster; Clarendon Hotel, Picton, William Pacey; Terminus Hotel, Picton, John Berry man; Star bo rough Hotel, Ernest Limbrick; Royal Hotel, Blenheim, Albert R. Durrant; Club Hotel, Blenheim, Annie Draper (an application by W. D. Draper for a renewal having been withdrawn); Criterion Hotel, Blenheim, William Hunter; Ferry Hotel, Spring Creek, W. K. Francis; Federal Hotel, Picton, Joseph Swindale; Commercial Hotel, Havelock, H. "C. Lawson; Masonic Hotel, Havelock, A. E. Gustofson ; Post Office Hotel, Havelock, Isabella Scott; Junction Hotel, M&rlboroughtown, Mary Howell; Post Office Hotel, Picton, Bessie Dooley. In the case of the Mahakipawa Hotel, John Mcßrearty being the licensee, the application was adjourned for three months for the.completion of certain rebuilding improvements ordered at the previous annual meeting. The chairman also called the attention of the applicant to the police remarks as to the conduct of th-3 hotel.

Permission was given to change the name of the Mahakipawa Hotel 1o Hotel Link water.

The application of A. E. Rofe for a license for the Commercial Hotel was adjourned to the next quarterly meeting for the compliance with the prior requirements of the Committee in the matter of minor repairs.

A PICTON HOTEL

In the case of the Post Office Hotel, Bessie Doolej7, licensee, reference was made in the police and health reports to the desirableness of reconstruction.

Mr Jensen, owner of the premises, appeared with plans and intimated his intention of erecting a new building. The reports as to the structural nature of the- hotel were totally unfounded; but he was prepared to go on with the work of reconstruction in brick. He had already spent about £700 on timber, sashes, concrete, etc.

Mr W. T. Churchward and Mr J. Conolly having addressed the Committee in behalf of the licensee and the owner respectively, the Committee granted, the application for a renewal, and expressed the hope that it would have the pleasure of seeing the owner's rebuilding plans at the next quarterly meeting.

At 1.20 a'clock the Committee adjourned to 2.20. - v ~
