GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKETS

(Christchurch Pr«fes, Wednesday.)

t The local wheat market ' is somewhat easier, though prices remain without change. There is not a great deal offering, bbutt t at the same time there is little inquiry. Millers and merchants are reported to have good stocks on hand, and in the present state of the London market, and the absence of cheap freights, there is no speculative demand. The top prices for wheat are 3s 7d to 3s 7id,. at country stations, for prime samples. Oats are fairly firm, offerings being somewhat scarce, and this fact tends to keep prices steady. Owing to the Avet harvest experienced in .Southland, the crop there has not the same influence on the market that it usually has, and the bulk of the business with Australia has been done by Canterbury this season. The rains in New South Wales have again checked the demand from there, acid some Australian purchases are under offer for resale here. The potato market having reached £5, at country stations, now shows signs of easing, and purchases have been made during the last few days at less than this figure. The late heavy rains, and the reported damage to crops on heavy land, as well as the discussion regarding the shipment of potatoes to Sydney, have tended to harden the market. On the other hand, .the crop in the Oamarii district is reported to be a good one, both as to yield and quality, and the conditions in connection with the export trade to Australia are such as to make merchants very doubtful about undertaking the risk. It is not likely that much will be done in this direction until it is seen how. the trial shipments fare. Onions are firmer, £8 now being; paid for immediate delivery, and £9 is offered for June delivery, the supplies getting s6arce.
