THE ENGLISH TOUR.

The days of exhibition cricket are over, and a game between an eleven ' and a fifteen, like the Englishmen engaged up-country in Australia, cannot be taken too seriously. Eleven ■ a-side should be the invariable rule these times. But perhaps that would be to the advantage of the touring team, and considerably to the advan- ■ tage of New Zealand, as then time j might be found to visit these shores. \ Englishmen might have been spared j to visit New Zealand, were the conn- i try matches omitted, ' and other' j matches set forward a little. ! Matches against Auckland, Wellington, 'Canterbury, and Otago and one game with New Zealand; or matches with Auckland and Canterbury (the two strongest provinces), and games with New Zealand in three of the centres, might have been played. The educative effect on New Zealand cricket—very much improved of late —would have been considerable; but perhaps the Maorilanders will never be taken seriously until they send a team to England or Australia. They have to-day in Dan Reese, Bennett, Sale, Hemus, Brook-Smith, A. M. Howden, Harold B. Lusk, Oliff, G. M. Thompson, W. Carlton, Sandman, Siedeberg, Mahoney, Saunders, Brice, Blamires and Gibbes the nucleus of a really useful side. THE AVERAGES. The batting and bowling averages of the English toam for all eleven a-
