Dr. Bennett waited upon the Hospital Board yesterday and asked that two additional probationers be appointed. He pointed out that nurses were always being required at the institution to take the place of those who went away. Nurse Stuart had resigned in order to study for an ! examination, and Nurse Aroa had to leave the service owing to ill-health, and they were thus reduced to five nurses and two probationers to do the work. He explained that it simply meant that they would have to increase the- working hours of the nurses from eight to twelve if the Board would not accede to his request. It was pointed out by Messrs Macey, Neville, Bary and Gane that Dr. Valintine had stated when in Blenheim that the hospital was overstaffed. Dr. Bennett said he did not think that Dr. Valintine referred to the nursing staff, and explained that he had been through the list of nurs- i ing staffs of every hospital in the Dominion, and had found no cases where : the patients averaged five to each nurse; in fact, in hospitals of the same size as > the Blenheim hospital they worked out at 3| to each nurse. The Board decided to appoint one ad- . ditional probationer.

Sold by all chemists and stores at 2s 6d and 4s 6d. 1 A Press Association telegram from Dunedin states that strong objection is offered to the primage duty of one per cent., on the ground that it means producing invoices every time that goods are taken out of bond, revealing private business to rivals to whom goods may have been sold in bond. There will also be the cost and difficulty of collection, and the probability that when the«time: is up the price will be higher and will not be reducedwhen the tax is taken off. It is suggested tha;t £d per lb. on sugar would'j be an easier method of obtaining money and would hurt nobody, or a surtax might be made on the present duties instead of on the first cost of articles.
