SIX HOTELS CLOSED.

ASHBURTON, June 11. At a meeting of the Ashburton Licensing Committee to-day applications were received for general licenses for six hotels at Geraldine, Orari, Rangitata and Arundel, whicn previously were in the Geraldme electorate but which, owing to the alteration to the electoral boundaries, are now in the Ashburton district. Mr Raymond appeared for the applicants'," and argued at length in support of the applications. The Committee, after retiring, held that under sections 8 and 38 of the Licensing Act, read together, they had no power to grant licenses.
