AN OVERCROWDED GALLERY.

HEARTRENDING SCENES,

(Received Jan. 13, 8.14 a.m.)

LONDON, Jan. 12. Children were admitted to the gallery at a penny apiece. Many of them were only four or five years of age.

For 400 seats 600 were passed in, and there were 400 more on the long winding stairs.

An attendant suggested transferring the surplus to the pit. A rush ensued.

Those hurrying down-stairs overwhelmed those ascending, till a mass of human beings was wedged in a. small space at the foot of the stairs.

Heartrending scenes took place in the hall and the mortuary when mothers were identifying their children.
