SYDNEY, Aug. 2

In connection with the voiding of IMr Varden's election to the Senate, and the election of Mr O'Loughlin, the High Court began to-day the hearing of an application that the rule nisi against the Governor of South Australia to issue a writ of mandamus for the election of Senator be mad© absolute. This writ was issued on behalf of Mr Varden after Mr O'Loughlin's election by the two Houses, on the ground that there should have been a fresh election by the people. Subsequently the Commonwealth was granted leave to intervene.

All parties are strongly represented by counsel.
