BEN FARLEY, is a very handsome horse, seven years old, of a golden chestnut colour, with Stockwell markings, standing about sixteen hands,* and has a beautiful temper. He is or rare build, and possesses a constitution and legs of iron. He was a highly successful racehorse, and whilst on the turf showed gameuess and stamina combined with great staying power and weight-carrying capabilities. Autumn Meeting, putting down a field of seven. As a three-year-old,' he started by running dead-heat with Battery, to whom he was conceding 161b, in the Flying Handicap at the.Ohoka and Eyreton J.C. Annual Meeting, beating five others : and at the Canterbury J.C. Summer Meeting won the Hornby Welter Handicap, carrying Bst 91b, finishing in front of ten others. At the Canterbury C.J. Autumn Meetings ho put down a strong •field of eleven in tne Yaldhurst Welter Handicap, carrying Bst 121b. As a four-year-old, at the South Canterbury J.C. Spring Meeting, won the ; Shorts Handicap, with Bst 91b, beating - six others. At the 'Canterbury J.O. * Metropolitan Spring Meeting, carrying top weight, 9st 51b, suffered a halflength defeat in the Epsom HighWeight Handicap, finishing in front oi thirteen others; and on the second day, again carrying top weight, 9st 91b, was beaten by a neck only in the Avon Welter Handicap, putting down a strong field of fifteen. At the Ashburton R.C. Summer Meeting won the New Year's Gift Handicap, carrying Bst 111b. giving two others 221b and 311b; following this up the second day by winning the Tinwald Handicap with Bst 91b, beating Suzannah, Huku, and Skirmisher. He next started at the Canterbury J.C. Summer Meeting, where he secured a good double by winning the chief> event each day, the races being—The Mid-Summer Handicap, of £350, beating Skobeloff, Dim Djm, Malatjua, Strathnairn, Dundas, Huku, Haira .and Cameo, doing the mile and a half in the exceptionally fast time of 2min 36 2-ssec; and on cue second day, the St. Alban's Handicap, of £250, carrying Bst 61b, putSng down * Rochester, The . Spinner, Benzion, Jupiter, and Skirmisher. Bred as Ben Farlev is, he cannot fail to be a successful sire, and he also has the advantage of being perfectly sound, a quality he inherits from the gr^ndsire, Apremont, none of. whose stock it is said have been known to break down whilst in training. What he would have been if influenza had not overtaken him (which caused his retirement) it is hard to say; as it was ho proved himself more than capable of holding his own in the big handicaps run on metropolitan courses. *•*.'.
