Mr John Gibbs, known as '' Soldier Gibbs," having been in the Twelfth Feos, died at Wakefleld to day, aged 99 years and four months. He was a resident of the district sixty years, arriving in 1844. He was with Captain Englind, who was killed in the Wairau Massacre.

The death is also recorded of William Songer, a pioneer, who accompanied Captain Wakefield, and was present at and survived the Wairau Massacre, He was aged 84.
