The charge against Caleb Thomas, coal minor, of assaulting Constable Fairhall at Denuiston in October last was before the District Court yesterday, after adjournments due to Fairhall's bad health, alleged to be dne to the injuries. The jury now disagreed and a new trial was ordered for next Juue* . Thames April 10. The work of surveying the Piako Block, consisting of two hundred thou« sand acres, is being proceeded with. Tin's work is undertaken as a preliminary to opening up the block for settlement. Members of the survey party report that the land is of splendid quality, and when drained should be similar to the Taieri Plains, where drainage has been attended with, most successful results.
