THE FIEST CONTINGENT. ♦ LOSSES BY DEATH AND SICKNESS. Wellington, March 21. , A report from Major Eobin shows that so far the first contingent have lost by death or sickness 17 of their number. Besides four killed m action, Troopers Patterson and Burroughs died of enteric fever, the following are invalided, and have either already returned to New Zealand or will do so : —Sergfc Gwatkin, Troopers Jenks, Gaudin, and A. K. Taylor, suffering from chronic complaints, Trooper Hunt, injury to back on board ship, R. Young, injury to back by fall from a horse, J. Hurford, heart disease, R. Wallace, hernia, D. J. Ryan, physically unfit. Besides the above, Saddler J. Aitken is missing, and Sergt. Bond disabled by a kisk from a horse. He will probably be m the hospital for a month.
