A FURTHER ATTACK.
Received August 9, 10.20 a.m. Shanghai, August 8. Yesterday a mob attacked the British and American mission houses m Fathan, near Canton. The hospital was demolished, and some of the residents fled from the city. A Chinese gun boat has been ordered to proceed there. The vegetarians number 12,000, and are well armed. They state they intend to destroy the whole of the missions m the Quang Tung province, and eject missionaries. It is reported that an outbreak against Christians has taken place m Ching Chow, Hupi Ta Ping, and Anhiu. Two hundred Sikh troops stationed m Hong Kong, is escorting Mr Mansfield to Kuching. The attack was organised by officials. At a public meeting resolutions were carried denouncing the connivance of the officials. Complaints are made of the inadequate means of the British Government to protect subjects m the East, and demanding that pressure be brought to bear on the Chinese Government to stop the outrages. The American Consul m Foochow reports that he has obtained the names of the leaders of the massacre.
