[by electric telegraph— copyright.] THE INDIAN ARMY. THE PROTECTION OF SIAM. [UNITED PBIBB ASSOCIATION.] London, August 16. In the House of Commons, Sir George Chesney, replying to criticisms upon the expense of the Indian military establishment, pointed out that though British territory has now advanced to the Russian frontier, the native army has been reduced one-third during the last fifty-years. Tne New Zealand Shipping Company's cargo steamer Tekoa left today for Port Chalmers. August 17. Danish butter is quoted at 100s per cwt. A Blue Book just published shows that Lord Rosebery proposed that Siam should be placed under the joint guarantee of England and France. M.
