THE MERCANTILE BANK CASES.
+ HEATED DEBATE IN THE VICTORIAN LEGISLATURE. [united pbess a&sooutios.] Received August 13, noon. Melbourne, August 18. m the Legislative Aigembly last night, upon a motion to go into supply, an amendment vras moved condemning the unsatisfactory position of the Mercantile Bank case*. A heated debate took place, during which Mr Isaacs, er-Solieitor-Gtneral, said that if he ware still at the head of the Department, Mr Martin, the magistrate who refused to ifisae the eummonees, should not be allowed to remain m the service another boar. The Premier said the Government had nothing to do with the Grand Jury or with the Magistrate's decision. Mr Shiels said the history of the oases was a long and dreary record of miserablt bungles. The amendment was originally negatived by thirty-three.
