ATTEMPTED INCENDIARISM

(united press association.) New Plymouth, June. 22. A daring attempt at incendiarism was made last night, endangering a large block of buildings, m which the Criterion Hotel stands. Early this morning Mrs Hoskings, who keeps a crockery shop m Brougham-street, found her house full of smoke. She got up and searched for the cause, and found that under the ground floor of the next shop had beep placed a box filled with paper which had been lighted. There was also half, a sleeye of a colored shirt, and two small peices of candle, but the latter, apparently, had not been ignited. A wooden pipe was also found close by. The fire had not been rapid enough to catch a good hold on the building, and on the alarm being given the flames were quickly extinguished. Had the fire takeu place, a large 'destruction of 'valuable property must have taken place, 'for Copk, grocer, Wright, draper, Gilmbiu 1 , stationery, and the Criterion Hotel were all endangered.
