BOROUGH COUNCIL,

A special meeting of the Borough Counoil was held last night. Present : The Mayor (m the chair), and Ora Clark, Houidsworth, Douelin, Ching, Riley, MoArtney, and Sinclair. A report was read from the Inspeotor of Works, with reference to the dam being erected by the Wairau Road Board across the Taylor river, theeffeotof which might be to cause erosion on the north-west side, and to turn the river down behind the bank erected on section 6 Omaka. The dam wr ■ being worked and the channel cut on Mr T. Eedwood's land. Mr Barleyman also wrote, pointing out that one of the consequences of the dam might be to divert the Taylor through Southside. It was arranged that a Committee of the whole Counoil Bhonld visit the aoene at 10 o'clook on Wednesday morning. Letter from the Salvation Army, applying to have the ratea remitted on the Barracks, m the same way as was done with ohnrches. Held over until the next meeting of the Counoil. The Council went into Committee and discussed the drafc agreement with Mr Pritchard for the purchase of the gas works, whioh was agreed to with certain j amendments. They also considered and settled certain arrangements with Messrs Holmes and Bell as to raising the loan, the length of years, procuration fee, and other matters. The Committee reported, and the Council confirmed what had bean done. The meeting then adjourned until Weduesday next at noon.
