The funeral of Paul, the Teoreore prophet, notorious for his dreams and flag at the late Maori meeting, has just passed through to Masterton. He died yesterday at Nature Pah, Black Bridge. James M'Manus, charged with stealing a cash-box and £6 10s from the bar of the 'Winchester Hotel, was sentenced to three years' penal s°rvitude ; James Corriskey, Hugh Boyd, aud Patrick Egan were charged with wilfully setting fire to a haystack, the property of William Gosling, farmer, Mount Horrible. Egan said he was guilty, but Boyd and Conißkey quite innocent, and the Crown having no evidence against these two, they were discharged. Egan got a good character from the police. His Honor said he would take his case into consideration, and see if, under the circumstances, he could award a light sentence for so heavy an offence. The unemployed are still agitating here. At a meeting held en the breakwater this morning the following telegram, received by the Mayor from tbe Government, was read : "Government can't give answer re. unemployed. March m to" see Calcutt, if no newß from him March goes to Chnstchnrcb, but returns on Monday or Tuesday." The telegram was received with groans and hisses. A further meeting will be held to-morrow. It is stated that Dr Weir, the gentleman who was chiefly instrumental m getting tcgether the magnificent stud of Lefand Stanford, the Californian railway king, has engaged a whole one side of the s.s. Zealandia's after-deck, on her next vojage from San Francisco, for the accommodation of his horses. ■ As a first instalment he brings three mares, six stalliona, and one gelfng, all of them being of the purest blood. Dr Weir takes his horses to Sydney and Melbourne, but it is possible endeavors will be made to have at least one stallion left m New Zealand. Wellington, This Day, Jonas Woodward, an old and respected Welling 'an resident, died suddenly this morning. He was working m the garden when he was seized- with a fit of apoplexy, whioh resulted fatfUy. Deceased was formerly Public Trustee. Wellington, Thiß Day. The Local Bodies Conference passed the following resolutions : — That it is absolutely necessary that some assistance m tbe shape of subsidy be given to local bodies to complete the construction of roads within districts heretofore sold by Government, and wholly or partially settled, the Government having failed to provide for these necessary works out of the proceeds of the sale of such districts m times past.
