The Queen reviewed the Fleet at Spithead yesterday. There were ten broadsides, eight turrets, six sloops, and two torpedo boats. The weather was boisterous and evolutions •were abandoned, and only salutes fired. The Queen sailed between the lines. Many peers and Commoners were aboard the Euryalus, besides a thousand spectators. Two hundred yachts and a great number of excursion steamers were present. One boat capsized and a waterman was drowned, which was the only casualty. Obituary— Mr Gilfillan of Dundee. There has been rioting at Ottawa. The Catholics, after an Orange procession, insulted the Orangemen, and the latter retaliated, using pistols; priest's house attacked, hotel demolished, several arrests, serious injuries. A new loan of L 9,000,000, 000, 000 is required for railways and other public works ; L 4,000,000 asked this year. Sydney, August 14. The Easby arrived at Newcastle yesterday. The Herald's London correspondent says the Secretary for the Colonies desires to avoid re-appointing Robinson as Governor at Sydney, but has extended his term to gain time to appoint his successor. The Bank of England has raised the official minimum to 5 per cent. The British and Australian Trust Company, with a capital of L 2,000,000,, 000,000, has had its first issue of shares to the amount of £1,000,000, subscribed twofold. Wellington, August 14. The County Conference to-day concluded its business. Resolved— That the Counties Act be amended, so as to give a right to Counties to levy Coui ity Rates over outlying districts. That a written acceptance of nomination by a candidate for election, if properly attested, shall be sufficient. That the present system of survey of roads through Crown lands is unsatisfactory, and Conference suggests that before sectional survey is undertaken, an engineer be appointed to lay off and grade the road lines. That thanks be tendered Government for the use of the room and free printing ; also thanks to the Chairman, especially for his casting vote re maintenance of hospitals. A new bi-weekly paper called the Waipawa Mail will be started at Waipawa, Hawke's Bay, m about a fortnight by Mr Hugh Thompson, at present editor of the Wellington Chronicle.

Wellington, August 16. i The annual Postal Report just published says the recent General Postal Union may be regarded as one of the most, important events bearing on the future administration of the Postal Service, and although the decision to join; the same will entail a small loss of revenue, it is held that having regard to the many important advantages secured, the Colony should be prepared to incur the loss. The absence of any serious complaiut against the> department is a proof that the public interests are well cared for. It is intended to establish an Inland Parcels Post, by which merchandise, raw and manufactured, and many other articles may be forwarded through the post at nominal rates, [owing to arrangements made with the Imperial P^st Office authorities by the Agent-General. Arrears of postages to the amount of £36,000 due to the Colony have been paid. Penny Savings Banks at Schools and factories may be established, the necessary forms are being printed. The question of establishing suburban deliveries is under consideration. The gross sum revenue for the year is £ 1 14, 291 ;|estimated expenditure £135, 389 being L 4846 less than the expenditure of the preceding year, Increase of letters 1,284,133, books and newspapers 845,743, equal to 10 per cent. The circulation of post cards has not diminished the revenue. The cost of free or officially franked correspondence has been £52,848. Newspaperwrappers sold amount to £72, 130. Unclaimed or dead letters dealt with 65,953. Registered letters 60,587. New Post Offices are to be built at Wellington and Timaru. Comparisons are made between the time taken m delivery of London Mails via Frisco and Suez. By the former mails have been delivered at Wellington m 42 days, by the latter m the shorter time of 37 days. Nett cost to the Colony of Frisco service for the year £13,181, Suez service £6,844. Money \ orders 90,672 for £334,973!; revenue from money orders £5714. Savings Banks deposits 60,953 representing £681,294 ; there was an excess of deposits over withdrawals of £141,271. Christchujrch, August 14. . The Government land sales on Monday and Tuesday realised over £5000.

The Rangita railway bridge caught fire yesterday, not much .damage ; supposed to be caused by sparks from the engine. A benefit to W. Hoskins m honor of his fortyfirst professional anniversary, took place at the Theatre Royal last night. It was a grand success. There was a large and brilliant audience. Hoskins received a perfect ovation, and during the interlude was presented by Sir Cracroft Wilson vrith. a cheque for £200 raised by public subscription, and by members of the theatrical company with a gold chronograph watch, costing sixty guineas. Auckland, August 14. The conference between the brewers and publicans took place to-day, when the latter agreed to forego the additional half-penny charged on beer, the price to be Is 6d per gallon as before, with the tax added. It was also resolved that a delegate, representing the publicans and brewers, be sent to Wellington to oppose the tax. The Chamber of Commerce has received the following reply to their congratulatory telegram :-"Am honored by receipt of message from Auckland ; cordially thank Chamber of Commerce— Beaconsfisjcd." The Hinemoa has sounded the Katikati j harbor entrance, and found only 11 feet of ! water. The Lady Jocelyn will therefore be towed to Tauranga, and her immigrants landed there. Patea, August 14. Up to yesterday the Waimate Plains survey was proceeding satisfactorily and. without the slightest apprehension of interference by the natives. A few Europeans, riled at their prognostications of evil not having proved true, are said to have given false reports as to theintentions of the Government, by asserting that fighting was intended. These reports were spread on the plains by a few dissatisfied natives, but with no avail, and the work is proceeding. Wangaktui, August 14. A young man named Frank Martin was killed at the railway station at noon to day, while shunting some goods carriages. The deceased, who was a porter, ran m between two timber trucks to couple them, but timber projecting over the tracks caught him, and his chest and back were crushed, death being almost instantaneous. Balclutha, August 16. Gornian, agent for Nobel's dynamite has finished the work of blasting rocks on the CJntha River, .ordered by the Board of Conservators. The work is very satisfactorily carried out and it is believed that no rocks now obstruct the navigation of the river at the point some miles below Beaumont. Gornian yesterday afternoon experimented by dynamite upon tree stumps on Inch Clutha m the presence of a large number of settlers. The Clutha experiment is considered highly satisfactory. One large stump and roots completely smashed, were blow out of the ground and pieces scattered hundreds of feet over the paddock. Gornian fully explained his mode of using dynamite to those present; he also experimented at the Corporation Quarry here, showing its great strength over ordinary blasting powder. ... .
