(Per Grevllle's Telegram Company), Arrival of San Francisco Mail. Auckland, Friday. The Nebraska arrived to-day, having made a splendid passage of 16 days. She brings a large mail for New Zealand and Australia. Her dates are anticipated by the Java Cable, but the following are additional telegrams from files received. The London Costermongers arc starving owing to the failure of the fruit season. Great distress exists in the country districts after the harvest, Canterbury Cathedral is being repaired after the late extensive fire. The American papers consider Grant’s return as certain. Prssengers by the Nebraska: Mr McCausland, W. H. Weeks, J. S. Monro, C. B. Layder,.( agent for Chinamen’s Circus, W. Thossnull, Kcv. A. N. Tait, J. A. Smith ; with three steerage for Sydney, and 24 for Melbourne. For Port Chalmers, G. L. Sazc and wife, Mr 'and Mrs Yon Blacon, Dr. Barrows, Mrs Tiriney; for Lyttelton, C. J. Todhunter, Seely. Three steerage. Her latest datest are to Oct. 9, The Dakotah leaves San Francisco on the 6lh Nov., and it is expected here on Dec. 2nd. London, Oct. 9. 40 persons have been killed by an explosion in a coal mine, and many others are missing. The Queen of Holland is visiting England. The steamer Hilba was lost on Oct. Bth off South Shields All was lost. A Birmingham firm has contracted to furnish the. Prussian Government with 150,000 rifles of an improved pattern. In Spain an attack was made on the life of King Amadeus by ten men, who were pursued by the police, but escaped. The King was unhurt, but the occurrence causes great excitement in Madrid. The storekeepers of Madrid made an assault on the police with clubs and stones. An official statement is made giving the result of the option given at Strasbourg, which shows that in the .new German Provinces of Alsace and Lorraine 164,633 declared in favor of returning to French citizenship. Of this number 88,800 declarations become [in] valid thmugh emigration to France, and in addition to it 12,000 domiciled Frenchmen left the Provinces. An explosion occurred on the steamer Senegal at Liverpool, when several persons were lost.
