THE Marlborough Express.

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 1872. A POLITICAL PRAYER.

•• Git« me the liberty lo know, to'utter, and torrgue freely according to conscience, above all other liberties. —Milton

“ Lord, keep our memories green.” Express, Sept. 1870. A very characteristic and disingenuous placard has been issued by Mr Ward’s friends to-day, containing garbled extracts from articles published in the Express a year and a half ago, in reference to the question of election of the Superintendent by the People. The placard does not, however’, tell the electors on what subject, or on what grounds, we then differed with Mr Seymour, which, in all fairness, it should have done ; the more especially as that gentleman has not only amply explained, at recent meetings, the transaction to which we then alluded, and so threw a different light Upon it, but he has publicly pledged himself to support the principle of Election by the People, for which we then and still do contend; but, what is more, he has promised to bring in a Bill for securing to the People their just right and privilege. Our memories are quite green on that subject, and what is more, we have a distinct recollection of hearing Mr Ward, in the Provincial Council, oppose the principle in question, when he moved the following motion “ That it was not desirable that the Council should be deprived of the privilege of electing its own Superintendent,” After this move, and the arguments evolved on the occasion, we can repeat, with redoubled energy—“ Lord, keep our memories green!”
