A sensation ii - been caused (by the publication of tli• • i.r.uites of a secret meeting of the American Independence Conference, an organisation of prominent anti-tßritisli Irish Americans and German Americans, at which a report 'vn»» received of an ultimatum present'd to Mr Hughes (Republican candidate for the United States Presidency’) demanding that he should attack Great "Britain in a public speech in exchange for election support. Air Hughes admits that be conferred with the organisation but denies having entered into an agreement although the IrishAmericans and German-Americans consider that an agreement was made. The Republican managers are fearful (hat the revelation will seriously ieopardise Air Hughes' chances of election.
