SCHOOL VACATIONS.

GORE. *•: The annual "breaking-up" of the Tf'ore Public School took place yesterday atternoon in the Town Hall, when the building was crowded by pupils and their parents and friends. Mr A. Martin (chairman of the committee) presided and on the platform were Messrs G. J. Anderson, M.P., D. L. Poppelwell (Mayor), J. Hunter, M.A. (rector of the Gore High School), Blakie and Kerse (members of the committee) and J. Golding (headmaster). The chairman intimate! that owing to the hot afternoon and the crowds': state of the building it had been decided to present the prizes awarded in the infant room and Standard I. and dismiss the children in those classes for the rest of the afternoon. After this had been accomplished the chair- * man gave a brief address, pointing out what had been done during A he jvar. The result of the annual examination by Inspectors Hendry and Wylie had been eminently satisfactory. In reviewing the past he recited the names of a number of puplis who had received their primary education at the Gore Public School and who had gained distinction at higher educational institutions. Mr D. L. Poppelwell reminded the children that if they did not get prizes that day the fact of competing for them would do them good and bring them nearer to the goal of Mieir pmbition. It was said that all tilings.came to those who knew how to waif, but the boy who was prepared to struggle for what he aimed for would vet win the v goal. Let them form noble ideals %-fcnd resolutions as to what they would do in the future. That thought brought another to his mind: Everything comes to the man 'ho will wait If he'll wait in a place that is meet; But it's useless to wait for an i ptown tram On the downtown side of the street. From the girls they expected sweet ideals. They should avoid that class of girl who had no ideals, but they formed a class met very often to-day. They were very well described by one of their poets: - She could swing a six-pound dumb-bell: She could fence, she could box ; She could ramble by the river: SJie could scramble o'er the rocks; S6e could play at golf or hockey, Or play tennis all day long ; But she couldn't help her mother, 'Cause she wasn't very strong. They wanted girls with ideals of home life, and he urged them to remember that in that respect the girls' ideals had the fullest play. He wshed all a merry Chrstmas and a happy New .Year.

Mr G. J. Anderson, M.P., congratulated the committee, the headmaster and the staff upon the excellent results of the year's work. He stated that for some seven years he had been a member of the committee and knew the I efforts made to advance the interests of the school. The staff was among the best in Southland, and that being the ease,' good results naturally followed. TWspeaker then went on to refer to the primary education system of the Dominion and the duty of parents to see that their children were given every facility for taking advantage of its benefits. He counselled the children I also to avail themselves of the syllabus, i which had been designed to give a! practical trend to then- education. The law had been altered last session so that «vening continuation classes could be formed for the benefit of those who had not been able to complete their primary education at the day school. He reminded the children to remember the i subject of the recitation which had been given and always "play the game" in whatever walk of life they might find their life's work. He wished them a merry Christmas and a happy New Year, and suggested that they should not worry about books during the six weeks' holidays but make up their minds to thoroughly enjoy themselves. Rev. G. Hervey added his congratulations on the success of the school during the past year and complimented the prize-winners on their success. He concluded by moving a hearty vote of thanks to the speakers for their addresses. Mr J. Hunter. M.A.. in seconding the motion said he hoped to make the closer acquaintance of many of »the boys and girls he saw before him that day. He had no doubt they would get on as well together as they had done in the primary school. ' Children's Programme. Drfring the afternoon the children the following programme—--Recitation, "Pinkie Winkie," Marguerite Fox ; musical bells, inafnts ; recitation, "The Lady Sun," May Graham ; chorus, Standards I. and 11. (Mr Lyttle); recitation, "Vitai Lampada," Evelyn Reed; chorus, Standards 111. and IV. (Miss Stenhouse). The chairman announced that the school would reassemble on Monday, January 30, and the school excursion would take place on February 1. The proceedings terminated by the children giving three hearty cheers for the teachers. PRIZE LIST. Standard Vl.—Dux boy of school: William Gowdy. Dux girl of school: Madge Brand. EAST CORE. The annual "break-up" ceremony and concert of the East Gore school took place in the Dominion Hall last evening and was very largely attended. Mr Walter Gee (chairman of the committee) presided. In the course of a brief address lie made special reference to ths work of the school and paid a tribute to the headmaster (Mr Gilchrist) and his able staff. The school had established a record in the number of attendance prizes gained by pupils for the past year. On behalf of the committee he thanked all those who had assisted during the evening and those who had so generously donated prizes. Mr G. J. Anderson, M.P., also gave a brief address, in the course of which he congratulated Mr Gilchrist, the staff and the committee on the result of the year's work. The East Gore school (he said) was looked upon by the Education Board as one of the best in Southland. Under the control of Mr Gilchrist and his able staff the school, he felt sure, would not only repeat but would surpass its successes of the past. The only way to keep up the honor of the school was through the efforts of the pupils themselves. They must be workers in order to do any good. MiAnderson referred to the new provision made in the Education Act whereby continuation classes were to be established to aid those who could not attend day school after passing the sixth standard. The speaker concluded by wishing the pupils and staff a merry Christmas and enjoyable holiday. The following programme was then submitted:—
