AN EMPTY POCKET.
-MR CARNEGIE'S DILEMMA. Mr Andrew Carnegie's chauffeur was charged with driving at a speed beyond the legal limit, which for New York is fifteen miles an hour (says the New lork correspondent of the London Daily Mail' of December 8). Mr Carnegie, who gave evidence, said that he thought the limit was the same in New lork as in Scotland—namely, twenty miles an hour. The chauffeur was committed for trial and the magistrate remarked to the millionaire that he supposed he would stand as surety. Mr Carnegie replied that he had no money with him, and the magistrate offered to lend him some. Hie millionaire, however, offered as surety his Fifth-avenue mansion, which is assessed at £200,000, and is worth more.
