To-day promises to be a day of re•ords in the history of the Gore Raeug Club. The most valuable programme ■vit olfere<l by a Southland racing in.titution attracted the largest nominaLions since the club was l'ormtd, the

chalice of securing :i share of the goon things going induced owners to accept lively, tln< prospect of witnessing good racing drew to the town an unusually large iiiiinher of visitors from the sui'rounding district and farther afield, and the line weather of the Morning gave promise of a thoroughly enjoyable outing. In all res]H>cts uj> to the time of our going to press anticipations had lieeu realised. The dry weather experienced of late resulted in the coarse being exceptionally fast, and the care liestowed on it and the surroundings generally was the subject of favorable comment. As usual the secretary (Mr -I. Latham) and his assistant (Mr J. Mitchell) had matters in perfect train for the successful conduct of the meeting, and everything went as smoothly as if on hall hearings. After the first race had been decided the stewards were called together for the pur|Kist> of making a prsentation to the honorary starter (Mr Fred. U"allis). This took the form of a handsoiuo gold watch. The presentation was made by the president (Mr T. Green), who referred to the onerous nature i.f the duties performed by Mr Wall's, who had, however, gained the thorough confidence, and goodwill of the club, the owners and the public, who all recoguised his fairness, jnoorruptibili.y and .•fficiency. Mr Wallis in reply said the ract that he had the goodwill of the club was exceedingly gratifying to him. He attributed what success he might iave had to his want of knowledge of racing and the fact that he did not bet an the horses. He admitted that he had at times been approached in an in—jinuating manner to influence the result of a race by the start, a:i,l this proved that there was probably something wrong in other places. ;Je had never done anything to injn: ' the •lub's good name, and was j)le. ;cd to think that the public and owners a'so :iad some confidence in him. H would always treasure their handsome \ resent. The following are the results :if the racing:
