SWIMMING. N.S. WALES CHAMPIONSHIPS. SYDNEY, Jan. 16. The 220 yds swimming championship of New South Wales was won by Healy, who defeated Hardwicke by three yards. Time, 2min 29 4-ssec. Wickham won the diving championship. East Sydney annexed the 500 yds teams' | rsc®. CRICKET. NOBLE'S RETIREMENT. SYDNEY. Jan. 16. M. A. Noble notified the Board of Cricket Control that his retirement from first-class cricket is owing to business exigencies. The Board recorded its appreciation of Noble's great services to Australian cricket. 80WLING. SOUTHLAND V. OTAGO. A FINE PERFORMANCE. DUNEDIN, Jan. 16. The bowling match, eight rinks a-side, between Dunedin Centre and Southland Centre, resulted in a win for the visitors by 17 points, the scores being 182 and 165 respectively. Detailed scores are as follows, the names of Southland players being given first:— McCallum, Jcfcoate, Dewar, Kissell, (s) 20 lost to Frew Walls, Matthews, Scoular (s) 24. Steans, Raeside, Hunter, Wallace (s) 36 beat Veitch, McLeod, Scott, Keast (s) 11. Louden, George, Holloway, Allan (s) 19 lost to Buchanan, Anderson, Hogg, McLaren (s) 20. Waugh, McNaught, Wilson, Hain (s) 25 beat Beebv, Brown, Armstrong, Balk (s) 21. McLean, Lon<roet, Ayling, Smith (s) 11 lost to Alien, Falconer, Jacobsen, McCurdy (s) 27. On the Kaituna green the Southland country visitors did their share towards securing the victory. Sebo not being satisfied to play second in Ingram's rink was replaced by Ramsay. Ingram romped home against Macgregor by 27 points to 13. Paterson went down badly, the score at one time being 17-3. On the tenth head, however, Patereon made a fine recoverv. and finished 26 all against Payne. Erskine and Mclntyre had a fine game, the latter finishing five up. Smith (Southland) was hopelessly beaten by McCardy—--31-11. On the Caledonian green Wallace beat Keast very badly, being 26 up. Hain and Allen won narrowly, Kissell being six down. Mackie fills the vacancy in the Hckonui tournament rink. CRICKET. DUNEDIN MATCHES. PEE UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION. DUNEDIN, Jan. 16. Cricket matches were continued yesterday in splendid weather. Albion, playing against Carisbrook B, made 121 in tbe first innings (Wordsworth 29 not out), and 36 for two wickets in the second. Carisbrook compiled 104 in the first innings (Godfrey 25). Carisbrook A put on 300 runs against Dunedin (Adams 84. Blamires 54, Rutherford 51). Dunedin made 42 for the loss of one wicket.
