BT KtECTEIO TELEGRAPH.—COFTEIQHT. FIB UNHID PRESS ASBOCJIATION. LONDON, Dec. 18. Tlic 'Financial News' says Sir G. H. Reid's appointment as High Commissioner for Australia will be considered unexceptional on this side as it means the Commonwealth's first representative has been chosen from the front ranks of Australian statesmen, and that the selection is a compliment to the Mother State, which sacrificed a good deal to make federation possible. Sir George Reid may count on a hearty welcome to London.
Except legacies to his family, servants and to the employees of the Liverpool shipping firm of Elder, Dempster and Co. (of which he was senior partner) the late Sir Alfred Jones left the whole of his fortune to charities. The value of the estate is estimated at £750,000. Mr Whinney, liquidator of the firm of W. A. McArthur and Co., reports that Australian creditors for £76,909 will bo admitted to rank for a dividend. He hopes early in February to pay a substantial cash dividend to creditors holding a ceritficate. The Shaw, Savill and Albion Company's new steamer Rangatira, which is intended for the New Zealand trade, has been launched.
