A KNIGHT OF THE GARTER.
EARL 01*' SELBORNE HONORED. Received Julv 20. 8.30 a.m. LONDON, July 10. Tho Earl of Selborno (High Commissioner for South Africa) lias boon created a Knight of the Garter, vice the late Marnuis of Ripon. Teheran is quiet and the bazaars have been re-opened. The most noble order of the Garter was originally established bv King Edward JTI. in 1348 anil is limited to the .Sovereign, Prince of Wales, such descendants of George T. as may be elected members of it, and to 25 knight companions, though sovereigns and princes of other realms and extra knight companions may be admitted by special statutes. Its abbreviation is K.G.. and it is the highest order of knighthood.
