Mr Geo. I'enney, of East Gore, returned yesterday alter a trip to Australia. The death occurred on Tuesday last at Wellington of Isabella, relict of the late Bev. T. L. Stanley, of Gore. The Mayor of Gore (Mr Arch. A. Mac Gibbon' who has been on a recuperative holiday, visiting Rotorua, Auckland, and other northern* centres, accompanied by Sirs Mac Gibbon, is expected home to-morrow.
" Mr H. Mayo, formerly conductor of the Gore Brass Band, who has been absent in a private hospital at Dunedin ior some weeks, undergoing an operation for the straightening of his toot, is to return to Gore by tonight's express, and will make u short stay before leaving to take up his abode in Timaru. 3lr Mayo's friends will be pleased to note that the operation was successful. Mr J. W. Velvin, who has sever.-d his-corun-ctioii with Messrs Thomson and Beattie, Ltd., Gore, and is leaving i to take up a position in the Christchurch branch of the D.1.C., was met by the Invercargill employees of the firm yesterday afternoon. On their behalf, Mr Hastie expressed regret at Mr Yelvin's leaving Southland, but wished him every good fortune in his newsphere of activity. On behalf of his old colleagues, Jlr lfastie presented Mr Velvin with a suitably-inscribed Gladstone bag, the gift being ackuowh-dged in adequate terms by the recipient. At last night's meeting of managers oi the Gore Presbyterian Church, feeling reference was made by the members to Mr Velvin s severance of his connection with them, he having acted most capably <m the committee for a considerable time. Mr Velvin and family leave for the north on Mondav next. Mr V. Miller, booking clerk at the Gore railway station, who has been transferred to Mat aura, was entertained to a valedictory gathering by his fellow-officials last evening. Mr J. A. Henderson, who presided, presented the guest of the evening, un behalf of the staff, with a handsome ease of pipes, cigar, and cigarette holders. ils a token of their appreciation of his niany cxccllcnt finalities. Kelicitious spit-eh-es were made by Messrs Edwards, Goeinski, McKcllar, McDonald, Murray. Hollands, and Johnston. Mr Millar brielly returning thanks for the presents and for the goodwill displayed towards him. Several toasts were honored and songs given by Messrs l.ovett, Edwards, McKcllar, Robson, Henderson, Raines, and Johnston (Invercargill). Mr Henderson takes Mr Miller's place in the local olliee, the former's position being tilled by Mr J. Currie, of Otautau.
