GOBE v. KOBTHEND. A match between these clubs was played at Gore yesterday, resulting in an easy win for tbe local men by 22 points. The weather was perfect, tbe green in capital order, and the match was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The visitors were entertained to dinner on arriving, and to light refreshments during the afternoon. The Railway Department has decided to prolong the week-end Queenatown excursions to Saturday, 28th March. These trips have proved most successful, and no doubt they will continue so till the end of the autumn season. The Mataura Horticultural Society holds its annual ehow on Wednesday 25th. The entries close on Monday 23rd. Though the season has been bad, no doubt this popular show will be as successful as in past years. The bearing of the charge against Thomas Fredrick Moore (chemist) and Mary Ann Mills (his housekeeper) of being concerned in the death of Lottie Ancel), who died under suspicious circumstances in Moore's shop at Waipawa in October last, commenced in the Napier Supreme Court yesterday. At the meeting of the Congregational Union at Dunedin yesterday the Kegistrar's report compared the position of the church in 1885 with that of 1903. In 188-5 there were 19 Congregational Churches, with a membership of 1682, and to-day there are 24 churches, with a membership of 2002 ; the value of buldings, etc., had increased in the eighteen k years from £40,000 to £55,000. A motion was X carried expressing appreciation of the resist- ■ ance offered by the Noncomformtst Churches of the Homeland to the Education Bill. In the evening the Eev. W. A. Evans gave an address on " The Basis of Authority." Both Christchurch morniDg papers editorially attack the English teem for ungeutlemanly conduct in the field at Christchurch on the 9tb, and the "Press" suggests that an apology is due to the local men. So far, however, no move has been made by the visitors, and Mr Warner, captain o( the team, has gone out of town. The incident is cieating great excitement and intense indignation here. Pearce's bails were removed, and the batsman, apparently consideiing that tbe ball bad come off the" wicket keeper, appealed, but neither umpire could give a decision, and it is stated that Beveial of tbe Englishmen made uncomplimentary remorks to the batsmen and umpires, which were repeated on more than one occasion as the game proceeded. A telegram received yesterday states that R. Spencer, who was umpiring at tbe wicket-keeper's end, bad addressed a strong letter of protest to the Cricket Council. Spencer says that when Pearce was finally dismissed, one of the Englishmen remarked, "Yes, and there would have been'another one out if it hadn't been for an incompetent umpire."

Sergeant-Major Grant visited Mataura yesterday and superintended the class firing of the Mataura Defence Birle Club. In the evening he held an inspection at the Drill Shed and gave some useful information as to the duties likely to devolve on members of rifle clubs in the event of their services being required for the colony. The Publio Works Department invites tenders for repairs to the police station and courthouse at Lumsden. Specifications may be seen at the post office, Gore. A meeting of the Mataura school committee was held on Tuesday evening. Present — Messrs Winning (in the chair), Balneaves, Barclay, Dickie, Park, and Peddie. The Chairman reported that the excursion to Colac Bay had been a great success, 667 persons attending. The Chairman handed over £1 Os 6d, balance from children's treat at the break-up of the school; also, £1 5s 4d balance from trip to Colac, the Bail- I way Department having allowed a commission of 10 per cent, on children's tickets amounting to £2 as 4d, 20s being spent for hot water at Colac. On the motion of Messrs Peddie and Barclay the Chairman and head teacher were accorded the thanks of the Committee for their services in connection with the excursion; the railway authorities to be thanked for the excellent accommodation provided on that occasion. The Secretary of the Horticultural Society asked the Ccmmitteo to grant the school children a holiday on Bhpw day, the 21st inst. The request was acceded to. The head teacher drew attention to some woks required, and the matter was left to the Chairman to attend to. The following attendance report was adopted :—On roll last quarter, 122 males, 126 females, admitted 5 males 2 females, withdrawn 3 males 4 females. On roll at present, 124 males, 124 females, total 248.
