Ministers say that they have nothing before them to indicate that Justice Conolly contemplates resigning. A matrimonial agent is doing good business in the Deep Stream district, Taieri (reports tho ' Leader'), undertaking to find a man a wife or a woman a husband at five shillings a case. On a farm at West Taieri may be seen a pair of horses with leggings on, mowing down Canadian thistles with a reaper. It is stated by a contemporary that in many fields where water lay all winter the thistles have entirely disappeared. The quickstep competition at the Masterton band contest on Thursday was won by Wanganui, with Masterton second, and Wellington third. The Southland Battalion Band was eleventh. S. Mellor (Waihi), aged 13 years, with 92 points, won the B flat horn solo at the Bands' contest at Masterton. The judge' expressed surprise when ho saw who the competitor was. The Wellington Garrison Band won the ohampionsbip with 275 points, with the Wanganui Garrjson Band Beeond. The Inveroargill was seventh with 21(j. Wellington Garrison also wins the Besson Shield. In their first innings against Canterbury Lord Hawke's team Bcorod 262 runs.
