CLINTON NOTES.
- " ■ . .-- (From Our Own Correspondent.) | After living for the last month' or so.i on the . excitement occasioned by the fitting up and sending off of- the fourth contingent "to the seat of war, tho people of this part have again settled down in the even tenor of their way, feeling that th6y have done their duty, and being content to stand back and watch developments, tin tho day 01 the departure (the glorious 24th as someone has appropriately called it) a veiy large number left here to swell the throng and witness tho splendid ceremony that must have gladdened the hearts of our boys and sent them on tbeir way rejoicing. While the ' majority returned by some of the lale trains on same ovening, olheis chbse to slay behind * and many tall yarns are told of the hardships connected with the trip. One young man, after many fruitless attempts to obtain ',' a lean against the wall" ih an hotel, had made up his mind to walk the streets- alj night, but woke up in the morning only to find that he had had a good night's sleep in the yards of a monumental, works. However, alls wellthat ends well, and in all probability the next excitement we will have will be the return of our troops from a glonous victory. Harvest operations aie well advanced. Cutting is almost finished, and another week s fine weather will see the bulk in stack. The crop this year is decidedly above'the average, and this, together with the fair price ruling, should bring a few shekels home. A meeting was held in the Presbyterian • Church on Thursday to consider the advisability of dividing the Popotunoa parish. Very little interest was taken in the proceedings, there being more ministers present than church-goers. No motion was passed. A similar meeting was held at Waiwera next evening, but tbe attendance was also disappointing- It was decided to test the feeling of the people by petition. This move seems to have been originated by the Synod, and the laxity of the people would almost show that it is not wanted. •"
