Southland Education Board

• Friday, August 2. The monthly meeting wag attended by the chairman (Mr J. W. Bain), and Messrs T. Mac Gibbon, Alfred BUdoy, George Froegatt, D. L. Matheson, Lunarian, and George McLeod. The following appointments wore made : — East Gore, Miss Jane Brunton, mistress ; Winton, Miss H. S. MeKenzie, mistress; Croydon, Mr H. Clark, head teacher. The Executive Committee wag empowered to make all arrangemems in connection wiih the opening of the Technical School. The Executive Committee reported as ■follows : — That in consequence of the decrease in the attendant at the Mandevills school during the past two months the pupil teacher had received three months' notica of the termination of her engagement ; that the proposed Conf.renco at Wellington to consider the question of the introduction of technical instruction into the schools and the revision of the present syllabus had been approved, and Messrs McNab and Mackintosh, M's.H.R., appointed to represent the Southland Board; and that the Committees at Croydon and Gore had been asked for expressions of opinion as to the necessity for establishing a new school at Croydon Siding, It was resolved to inform the Edenrlalo Committee that the Board would pay half the cost up to L 8 of suitable kindergarten apparatus. The following applications were granted : —Croydon, grant of L 3 10j towards cost of outbuildings ; Seaward Downs, half co3t of shelter shed ; Redan Valley, half Coßt of fencing ; Oharlton, 13 towards cost of repairs and draining ; and Balfour, permission to sell old school tank. The Inspector was instructed to report on an application for the establishment of a new school at Maitland Village, Waikaka Valley, It was decided to inform petitioners for a new school at Otimita that their request could not be complied with. The Inspectors' report on the pupil teachers' examinations was ordered to be printed and circulated amongst the teachers.*
