Frozen Meat.
.. . ♦ TRICKS OP THE TRADE. From Mark Lane ' Express ' of 27th May it appears that certain doings of one of the middlemen of the Central Meat Market of a most startling kind havo reoentlyjcome to light in the HighCourt of London. An owner of carcases consigned them to one of (he four hundred agents who sell on commission, and was not satisfied with the return that was sent to him. He commenced proceed- [ ings, we Are told, and asked for the production of the agent's books. This was strenuously opposed, but the Court decided the request was a reasonable one, and granted it. Then the case disappeared from view until it transpired that the defendant had been able to settle the matter by payment of L7OOO and costs. I " The nalnral deduotioa from such a ; state of affairs is (says the • Express ') that there must be something very rotten in the London Central Meat Market. The agent alone could not act in this way, or he would soon lose all bis businesc When a man can afford to pay L7OOO to settle a dispute of this kind, he muit have made: huge profits. If this were ah exception it would mean that others would soon gel the trade, for one man could not expect to keep it unless he returned as good profits as others."
