Southland Education Board

The monthly meeting of the Board held at Invercargill on Friday was at* tended by Messrs Froggatt (actingchairman), 'MacGibbois, Baldey, Hatheson, Baio, Lumsden, and McLeocl. The Education Department iotimated consent (o the Board's proposal to extend the term of the present scholarships for six months, and the Board decided to make the extension. The examinatiotiß of candidates for the primary schools for free education in the High Schools were fixed for the 10th De« cember and two. following days. The Executive Comiuitue reported that the following tenders had been accepted :— Pyramid Siding: New school, J, P|Petersen, L 129 10* ; Cl.atton Koad : New school, Hamilton and Cruickshankß, Lill ss ; JNiagara Falls (Waikuwa) : New school, J. P. Petereen, LU9 10* ; Ohatton : .Repairs and painting, Walter Joyce, L 26. That the following appointments had been made :~Charlton : J. C. Evison, head teacher j Wa.mumu ; Mary A. J. Wjall, head tfucher. That (he appointment of teacher at tho Longridge school had bten clfered to Mr A. L. Taller. The following applications were •> granted —Weipounamu : Permission to sell tank and devote proceeds towards Binking a well and vroviding a j.utupj Gore ; Coat of completing title to t«o site. . The inspector, cf works was instructed to call for tenders for painting and re* paii'3, to the Mafaura and Itiversdale ijcbcol buildings, and to arraDge for cartftsje of material to be u*ed in the erection of the school at Ohaitoo Boad (the residents, who had failed to keep their promise to do this, to be informed that the school fund will be withheld till the cost is del rayed). The Waikawa committee having applied to hare their school re-opened, it was decided to ssk them to supply an estimate of the cost, and to inform them that their application would be wnsidfrrd if possession of the buildinij were #ÜBranleed for three yean, tree of cost to the Board. It was decided to rcqaest the Laud Board not to alienate section 2. block 6, Waikawa, but to leßse it from year to year with right to resume possession if required for a school site. An offer from F. Anrhioleck lo lease section 23, block 2, Waikawa, was referred to tho sehcol committee for their opinion.
