ILLEGALLY ON THE CHEMISES, John Horan was charged (1) •ffith being drnnlc in a certain place, to wit, High street, at b a.m. on Saturday, 21st July; (2) with hojrig found by night, without lawful excuse, under the wool store of Messrs E- H, Pickering and Co., I'igh street. Accused said ho went under the uilding in order to get shelter :’om the keen night air. Constables Sheary and Ereuklin ave evidence as to finding the man ndcr the building, and that he ras hopelessly drunk. SW. E- P. Clouston, representaivo of Pickering and Co., said that | : t was a very serious case, as the I building contained all sorts of comI justiblcs, and would be very easily I iet on fire.
|j)K : Sergeant Scanian, who conducted . tlvo prosecution, said that the man ’.wus nui. hr.own to the police.
In reply to the bench, accused stated that he had come from KaiIcoum the previous day, and had stopped at a restaurant that night. Ho did not go back to the restau-
rant next night, and crept in under the building for protection from the night air. He pleaded hard to be let off.
His Worship convicted accused on the first charge. He had no option of inflicting a fine on the second charge, and would sentence accused to 14 days imprisonment in Picton gaol.
