It is stated that negotiations between tho New Zealand Government and the Midland Railway Company, have been practically! settled. It is considered likely that Mr Robert Wilson will represent the Company in New Zealand. In tho House of Commons Sir John Gorst denied there had been undue delay on the part of the Imperial Government in replying to a telegram from Sir Henry Parkes in March last on tho Chinese question ; on the other hand ho thought Lord ICnutsford had displayed great promptitude in dealing with tho quostion The return cricket match between the Gentlemen and Players was won by the latter by an innings and 39 runs. In the House of Representatives, the republican motion to omit imported raw wools from tho free list in the Tariff Bill was defeated by 120 to 102. T t is proposed that the clause admitting wool free shall come into operation on tho first day of October. Loxdox, July 16.
The Papal letter was read in tho Irish churches yesterday. It declares that tho Plan of Campaign is altogether an unlawful method of action, and it is therefore forbidden. The rescript rebukes tho opposition to the former to tho decision of his holiness July 17. The Bill providing for the appointment of commissioners to enquire into the Times’ charges against Mr Parnell, was read the first time in the House of Commons to-d;iy r . Mr Parnell angrily refused to say whether lie would accept or reject the appointment of a commission until the Bill had been circulated among the members of the House. Continuing he said no Government ought to nominate a tribunal and then fix terms with reference to it. Ho accused Government of being an accomplice of the Times, and compared them to butchers, the Parnellites being tho sheep for the slaughter.
