Wellington, July 16.
Captain Allman, of the Penguin, has received a cablegram from Melbourne, stating that his life-saving raft was tried in Hobson’s Bay on Saturday, the exhibition proving most successful. Cury and Gasparini, the French escapees, arrived here in custody from Auckland, and were lodged in the Terrace Gaol. They were arrested upon a warrant applied for by the French Consul for their extradition under the treaty existing between France and England. They will be brought before one of the Judges next week, but in accordance with the extradition laws it will be necessary to remand them for 15 days before the extradition warrant can be issued, in order to enable their friends to move for a writ of habeas corpus, if sufficient cause can be shown.
