A great commotion was caused in the Central Markets, Paris, lately owing to a firo which broke out in one of the base-inents-of the range of buildings where the poultry is kept. People thought that the whole of the Halles Centrales had taken fire, and tlio alarm was increased by the market-women, who nearly all left their stalls and ran for safetyinto the neighboring streets and houses. When the flames had been mastered, it was found that seven persons were seriously injured. Considerable damage was done to property, all the stock of poultry (about 100.000 birds of various sorts), as well as a large quantity of hampers, having been completely destroyed. The loss is estimated at about LBO,OOO.
