THE Marlborough Times. PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. SATURDAY, MAY 19, 1888.

Football.— There wi) 1 bo a practice this afternoon for members of the Marlborough and Union Clubs, when a good attendance is requested. Tally-ho !—The Hunt Club hound 8 meet at 2.30 this afternoon at the Kennels at Marlborough town ; on Thursday next at Mr T. Gregory’s, Spring Creek, and on Saturday at Reiwioktown. The Choeal Society.—The Committee met on Thursday evening, the President in the chair. A sub-committeo was appointed to obtain offers for a suitable room for practice, to commence next Thursday. A further sub-committee was also appointed to revise rules, select music, etc. The Accident to Me Stanton. —Mr Clarkson received a further telegram from Mr Stanton yesterday, stating that the sulky had been smashed, but that the horse had escaped miraculously, and had been recovered from the deep ravine, which was the only spot on tho decline where such a thing would bo at all possible. Fortunately, the occupants of tho vehicle were at the time out of the conveyance lighting the lamps. Mr Stanton is all right, but Mr Trege'a is rather knocked up. A Novelty. —Mr Marplo forwards us a copy of a reprint fac simile edition of the j Derby Mercury of January 10, 1788. The journal is one of the oldest in existence, and at the present time is one of the most important of tho provincial Press. The distinction between then and now is as marked as it is in all industrial, educational and scientific matters. The number before us contains four pages, in size a little larger than half those of this journal, and the advertisements (so dear to the newspaper man’s heart) occupy about threo-fourths of its spaco. Re-iikaeing. —ln connection with the case Colonial Bank v. William Nesbitt, in which Mr Allen, R.M., delivered judgment for plaintiffs at the R.M. Court yesterday morning, we understand that Mr M‘Nab, who appeared for defendant, has given notice to Mr Conolly, counsel for the plaintiffs, for a re-hearing of the ease, to take place this morning at tho usual hour. The grounds for Mr M‘Nab’s action are : (1) That the Court was erroneously under the impression that the defendant had abandoned the question of the forgery of the bills, the subject matter of the action ; and (2) That the Court suggested tho calling of a material witness, a Mr MTCerrow, who was not callod upon or examined as suggested. Accident to a Steajiee.— The steamer Wainui, which arrived at Wellington on Thursday from Fiji, had a narrow escape from a total wreck. She was abeam of the Port on Wednesday evening, but owing to the dense fog the loom of the land was scarcely visible, Captain Cromarty alid the chief officer were on the bridge, and the captain, who observed breakers ahead, gave the order full speed astern.” This was promptly obeyed, but, notwithstanding, the vessel ran on a projecting rock. She had no speed on, however, when she ran on the rocks, and she came off again by her own weight in about live minutes. When she went on she bumped distinctly on her forward ballast tank, and a little water was made. After the accident the vessel went on to Wellington, and an idea of the density of fog may be obtained when it is men - tioned that it took her over 20 hours to reach there. .She will he taken up on the slip and examined. Coal at the Claeenoe. Mr Sim, manager of the Clarence runs, has sent us (Kaikoura Star) a sample of coal obtained in the Inner Clarence in the neighborhood of Quail Flat. It is a hevy coal, and burns very fairly indeed, hut soon clinkers. However, as the sample sent us was taken from an outcrop it is very probable that when the seam is open d up some very good coal will he obtained. The fuel is very valuable to the inner portion of the runs, as firewood is yery scarce indeed over the range. On public grounds it is very much to be regretted that the outcrop has not been discovered on the eastern side of the run, hut the existence of coal on the western slope should lead to prospecting on this side.
