London, April 30. A tremendous panic lias occurred in the tin market, owing to the French syndicate ceasing to buy. Price of tin has dropped by over £SO per ton, and present quotations do not exceed £lO6 per ton.
Mr Phillips, a Homo Euler, has been elected for Lanarkshire (Mid) in place of Mr Stephen Mason, who resigned. The defeated candidates were Mr Bonsfield, a Conservative, and Mr Hardie, a labor candidate.
At a meeting of Catholics at Aldershot, the action of His Holiness the Pope in connection with affairs in Ireland was condemned, and resolutions were passed in favor of the establishment of a branch of the National League, and to divert Peterspenee in support of the League. Renewed reports are current that Cardinal Moran succeeds Archbishop Walsh, and great excitement prevails throughout Ireland. It is reported in the city that tho Great Eastern mine, Gympie, has suspended operations in consequence of the capital being exhausted. Tho rumor has had the effect of seriously prejudicing stock in other Australian mines.
It is stated that the inactivity of the Czar in connection with European affairs is because he is uncertain what attitude,Germany would assumo while the Emperor is ill.

The Eield states that New Zealand mutton is superior to English mutton, and suggests that all imported carcases ought to be branded in order to prevent any deception being practised. Berlin, May 1.
