In consequence of sequestration of the estate of Mr W. N. M‘Culloch, jun., M.P., for Cumberland, the seat has been declared vacant. Cardinal Moran denies the truth of the statement to the effect that he is to succeed Archbishop Walsh of Dublin.
One thousand pounds to eight hundred has been laid on Hanlan for the aquatic championship, which takes place on Saturday.
A ballast train ran off the rails on the Northern line this evening and was completely wr.3cked. The fireman and driver had a very narrow escape. The Government have decided to replace the present trams by the cable system. Druitt, manager of the Commercial Bank at Tiuonee, has been committed for trial on a charge of embezzling £ISOO.
May 2. The Government have called for fresh tenders for the construction of 50 locomotives in the colony. The Executive Rabbit Committee havo communicated with the New Zealand Government requesting- that a report on tho alleged epidemic of fowl cholera near Canterbury bo forwarded to them ; and also to send a small quantity of the blood of diseased fowls in vacuum tubes.

The sentence of doath passed on Gustavus Denis, for attempted murder at Dubbo has been commuted to imprisonment for life. Melbourne, May 1. A compromise has been effected between the Government and Captain of the steamer Afghan, by which the latter foregoes his right to land twelve Chinese w r hich he is entitled to do on the Government agreeing not to fine him £IOO per head for all in excess of the number. Arrangements are being made for tbe transhipment of the Chinese passengers booked for New Zealand.
Brisbane, May 1. A difficulty has arisen over the sculling race arranged between Hanlan and’ Trickett, to be rowed on the Eitzroy River, Rockhampton on the 3rd inst. Tho final deposit of Hanlan was not paid oh the due date, and Trickett claims that ho has forfeited his previous deposits. Hanlan objects to Trickett receiving the amount deposited, as the balance cf his ;(Hanlan’s) stake was posted in time to have reached Queen land when duo, and must have been delayed in transmission. Trickett persists in his demand for the stake.

Doctor Noilly lias been consecrated to tlie See of Port Augusta. The ceremony was conducted by Cardinal Moran; Fathers Chastagnon and Kirk of New Zealand being present. At an influential public meeting it was decided to ask the Grovernment to introduce a poll tax of £2OO, and a residential tar; of £2O.
