Per Press Association. Dunedin, March 4. The funeral of John M'Cutcheon, who was drowned at Bt. Clair while trying to save I’fe, took place to-day and was very largely attended, tho City, Port Chalmers and Suburban Eiro Brigade inembors attending. Cannon, who saved Miss Jeffrey after M'Cutcheon was drowned in the attempt, was presented last night with a gold watch as a mark of appreciation of his services. Amy Slier win, the vocalist, was accorded a public reception on her arrival in Dunedin last night. A tremendous crowd turned up at the station, and tho Ordinance Band played her to her hotel. Auckland, March 2. The shareholders of the Woolstock G.M. Company, Karangahake, held a meeting to-day, when an offer was received from Mr E. A. Howe, an English capitalist, to purchase at once the mine for .£II,OOO, of which £SOOO would bo paid down, and £OOOO in paid-up shares of 10s each, this offer to remain open ti'l August. No final decision was come to, Gut power was formally given to tho directors to sell the mine oil the most advantageous terms. By the reduction of the education voto the income of the Board of Education has been reduced by LGGOO, and to-day tho Board, to meet this, agreed to a sohemo of retrenchment involving reductions in ther expenditure to the extent of L7OOO. This sclieme includes the reduction which has recently been made in the following items Training College and classes, L 2250 ; dispensing with the services of teachers of singing and drill, L 750 ; offico staff and inspection, L 175 ; closing Cambridge High School, L 100; payments on strict woi Icing average, L4OO. The following are the further reductions proposed : (1) Thestaif of pupil teachers at tho schools to be reduced to tho strict limits of tho scale; (2) the schools to bo reduced by one pupil teacher in each school over 300; (3) tho employment of pupil teachers (under reguiation 40) in schools of from 30 to 40 pupils to bo discontinued ; (4) that pupil teachers who have twice failed to pass tho same exam, aud have not obtained classification in Class Ebe dispensed with. By this means a saving of £2OOO will bo effected. Grants to school committees aro to bo reduced by £OOO ; tho services of a visiting teacher of drawing and one clerk in tho oflioe are to be dispensed with, whilst the saluries of the two inspectors at present in the employ of the Board have been reduced to £350 per annum.
