Wellington, Jan 27. The Secretary of the Wellington Cricket Association Inn received a letter frjin Melbourne stating that it will be impossible for Vernon’s cricket team to visit New Zealand. h Arrived, French warship Fabert, from Akaroa. The City Council inteud to take steps to prevent overcrowding of boarding houses. The man Dye, who has been missing v from his lodgings for three or four has turned up all right. His behaviour for some time has been strange. Government have reoeived a cable message from the Premier of New South Wales to the effect that the extra supply of 50 Martini-Henri rifles required for the New Zealand Rifle Association cannot be spared.
The Exhibition Commissioners’ meeting took place this afternoon, when it was resolved that Sir James Hector should forward the following cablegram to the Secretary of the Melbourne Exhibition: “ Public interest in the Exhibition warrants the Commissioners increasing application to 20,000 feet of floor space, excluding fernery and art gallery. Inveeoabgill, Jan 27. The Primitive Methodist Conference closed to-day. Pastor George Muller, of Bristol, addressed the delegates. It was resolved that in view of the grievous evils inflicted upon society by gambling, horse racing, social impurity and intemperance, the Conference pledges itself to do its utmost in every possible way to suppress these vices.
Timothy Booth, a young man who has acted as accountant, ete., in the Western district for several years past, was arrested at Riverton to-day on a charge of larceny, as bailee of a cheque, the property of the Otautau River Board, of which he was clerk. It is stat I that other charges of a similar nature will be preferred against him. Auckland, Jan 27. A fire has broken out in the Puhipuhi forest, to the north of Auckland, and the bush is reported to be in great danger. The Kahakaharoa bush, belonging to the Union Sash and Door Company, is also on fire, and great destruction is certain unless rain falls or the wind changes. Bulk tests of 1-lcwt of Marioto ore returned loz 14dwt of gold, value £'2 16s per ounce. T. Peacock, member for Ponsonby, addressed his constituents to-night, and received a vote of thanks. His speech was principally a resume of the work of the session.
