THE Marlborough Times. PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 31, 1887. THE NEW YEAR.

The close of another year is suggestive of a moral balance-sheet and the interesting process known as “ turning over a new leaf.” As a rule, neither of those processes are particularly attractive, but tlje effort reouimi to face thorn must

prove beneficial to the mind. It is j pretty much the same with communities as with individuals, although i in the latter case the field is necessarily much wider. A community has a moral as well as a physical or material nature; as much as an individual, ■ and if the “new leaf” again | turned over is better than the last, 1 the advantage will bo in proportion. It is to bo hoped, at anyrate, that ! as far as this community in particular is concerned, and the Colony in general, the “new leaf” will be a decided improvement upon j the volume which ends with to-day. Fire and flood have visited us, and in common with all other portions of the Colony we have experienced our share of the depression ; but while the afflicton has somewhat chastened the spirit of the residents, they have not lost faith in the future of tho town and district. They enter upon tho New A 7, ear with increased vigor, begotten of a belief in the stability of the district. Assuming that hope to be realised, the Year will prove, what we wish our readers, a happy one.
